This year, we were once again due to partner with the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, to cohost a hybrid event with the City Hall and Sankofa Day.
Unfortunately, as a result of some last minute actions by the London Mayor, including the unilateral decision to remove a well respected member of our cultural advisory group, from the City Hall civic slavery remembrance event, some questionable additions to the programme along with the sudden backtracking of support for Sankofa Day by City Hall, we have made the difficult decision to pull out of cohosting the event. As a result of this decision we shall now be holding Sankofa Day in its usual home, Trafalgar Square, on Saturday, 21st August, yes, that’s Saturday coming, from 1-4pm. With a week to go this will of course not be the large event it usually is but a smaller more intimate and more organic one.
As a result of our decision, we shall now be holding Sankofa Day in its usual home, Trafalgar Square, on Saturday, 21st August, yes, that’s Saturday coming, from 1-4pm. With a week to go this will of course not be the large event it usually is but a smaller more intimate and more organic one. Sankofa Day is known as the people’s memorial and so we are asking you the people to step up and help make this happen. As part of the event we wish to gather 100 drummers on the square, so this is a call out to all drummers, no matter what age, race, sex or colour you are. Bring your drum and a chair and meet us on the square! For the Great Gathering.
If you are a speaker, spoken word artist or other performer and would like to get involved please send an email with links to your work to and the piece you wish to perform to volunteer@sankofaday.org
